Music Therapy (MUTY)

There are two types of Music Therapy courses: 

Music Therapy Topics Courses

 

MUTY M100 Introduction to Music Therapy 2 crs

MUTY M-100 gives students a basic understanding of music therapy, the history of music therapy, education and training requirements of music therapists, and music therapy methods with various clinical populations. Students will be introduced to the music therapy assessment, treatment, and evaluation process including writing appropriate goals and objectives. Finally, a brief overview of approaches to treatment and corresponding resources will be provided.

 

MUTY M120 Recreative & Compositional Methods 2 crs

This course will provide an overview of recreative and composition methods. Relevant technology for client participation and music creation will be introduced. Definitions, clinical goals, and facilitation techniques will be covered. This course will have a strong experiential component, whereby students  

 

MUTY M200 Music Therapy in Education & Habilitation      3 crs

This course will provide an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice in educational and habilitation settings. The use of music therapy methods and technology in assessment, treatment, and evaluation, integration of cultural considerations and normal musical development will be reviewed. This class has an experiential component. Prerequisites: Introduction to Music Therapy and concurrent enrollment in Developmental Psychology or permission of the instructor.

 

MUTY M220 Receptive Methods in Music Therapy 2 crs

This course will provide an overview of receptive (music listening) methods using in music therapy clinical practice. Relevant technology for music listening will be discussed. Definitions, clinical goals, and facilitation techniques will be covered. This course will have a strong experiential component, whereby students practice skills learned in class. Prerequisites: Introduction to Music Therapy or permission of the instructor.

 

MUTY M325 Music Therapy in Healthcare 3 crs

This course will provide an overview of music therapy theory, research, and clinical practice in medical settings. The use of music therapy methods and technology in assessment, treatment, and evaluation will be presented. The integration of cultural considerations into treatment planning will be reviewed.

 

MUTY M330 Clinical Improvisation in Music Therapy 2 crs

This course will provide an overview of improvisation methods using in music therapy clinical practice. Relevant technology for improvisation will be discussed. Definitions, clinical goals, and facilitation techniques will be covered. This course will have a strong experiential component, whereby students practice skills learned in class. Prerequisite: Introduction to Music Therapy, Piano for Clinicians or permission of the instructor.

 

MUTY M434 Music Therapy in Mental Health 3 crs

This course is an overview of music therapy theory, research, and practice as it pertains to assessment treatment and evaluation in mental health and wellness. There is an experiential component. Cultural considerations will be presented. Prerequisite: MUTY 100 Introduction to Music Therapy and PSYC A235 Abnormal Psychology or permission of the instructor.

 

MUTY M440 Professional Topics in Music Therapy 1 cr

This course will cover regulations and professional guidelines governing music therapy practice. Advocacy and program development will be discussed. Students will complete an advocacy project or a program proposal. Prerequisites: Introduction to Music Therapy or permission of the instructor.

 

Music Therapy Field Studies/Field Work Courses

 

MUTY M117 Orientation to Music Therapy Field Studies  1 cr

This course is a general orientation to Field Studies in Music Therapy, including the planning, conducting, and documentation of sessions out in the community.  Students start by observing and gradually progress to leading individual session experiences. Prerequiste: Introduction to Music Therapy or permission of the instructor. This course has a $50.00 course fee.

 

MUTY M217 Music Therapy Field Work Seminar II    1 cr

This course expands on the general orientation provided in the Orientation to Music Therapy Field Studies, with additional focus on verbal processing, behavior management, and technology use in Music Therapy.  Students start by observing in the first week of sessions, but are expected to start contributing to session experiences by the second week. Depending on the site, the student may be facilitating entire sessions by the end of the semester. Prerequisite: Orientation to Music Therapy Field Studies. This course has a $50.00 course fee.

 

MUTY M317 Music Therapy Field Work Seminar III  1 cr

This course expands on verbal processing and behavior management within the clinical setting. There is an additional emphasis on multi-cultural cognizance and sensitivity. Students begin co-facilitating sessions with the instructor and gradually progress to facilitating sessions independently. This course has a $50.00 course fee.

 

MUTY M417 Music Therapy Field Work Seminar IV   1 cr

This course focuses on ethical practice and the use of research to support music therapy clinical work. Similar to Field Work Seminar III, students at this level typically meet with their supervisor in advance of the first session at their site so they can come in facilitating session experiences from the first day there, but are expected to be facilitating sessions in full by the second week. This course has a $50.00 course fee.

 

MUTY M497 Music Therapy Internship  1 cr

Internship requires a minimum of 1000 clock hours of uninterrupted service at an AMTA approved or university affiliated clinical setting, commencing at the completion of other coursework. This course has a $50.00 course fee.
